Star-Formation Driven Molecular Superwinds as Understood from the Two Nearest Starburst Galaxies (and a Small Survey)

I will use the two nearest starburst galaxies: M82 and NGC 253 as examples to discuss the origin and fate of galaxy-scale molecular outflows driven by star formation. Outflows of interstellar gas driven by stellar feedback should be a key element in the interaction between galaxy disks and the huge reservoirs of gas and dust in the circumgalactic medium. They should carry metals and dust out of galaxy disks and may deplete future fuel for star formation. The most mysterious but potentially most massive (at least near the disk) component of these outflows are molecular winds. I will present results from three recent studies of nearby starburst galaxies. In NGC 253, I will show ALMA's view of the base of a molecular superwind. In M82, I will show how we track the fate of gas after it is launched by comparing it to spatially resolved atomic gas, dust, and measurements of gas kinematics. I will also mention efforts to understand whether star formation can drive the truly monstrous molecular outflows seen in the local ULIRG population.

Title:  Stability of Ground States for cubic NLS in 1-D

Abstract:  In this talk, we discuss orbital stability of ground state (equilibrium) solutions for a 1D cubic nonlinear focussing Schrödinger equation under perturbations of H1(R) initial data for cNLS. Stability of equilibrium solutions is an important condition for being able to use theoretical models in physical applications. The method of proof is a generalization of Lyapunov stability theory for nite dimensional systems. We rely on global time existence of a unique H1(R) solution to the cNLS (Ginibre-Velo, 1977).

TITLE: The Oort conjecture and its generalizations.

ABSTRACT:  A common mathematical problem is to be given a mathematical object in

characteristic p, and to ask whether it is the reduction, in some

sense, of an analogous structure in characteristic zero.  If so, the

structure in characteristic zero is called a "lift" of the structure

in characteristic p.

We will consider a power series version of this problem, called the "local lifting problem." Given a characteristic p algebraically closed field k, and an action of a finite group G on k[[t]] by k-automorphisms, is there a DVR R in characteristic zero with residue field k such that the action of G lifts to R[[t]]? Oort conjectured that this is true when G is cyclic, and this conjecture was proven by the speaker, Stefan Wewers, and Florian Pop.  We will discuss this conjecture and its generalizations.  Examples will be given throughout.

We remark that the motivation for studying the local lifting problem comes from understanding lifts of branched covers of curves from characteristic p to characteristic zero.

Persian Jewish Music

This lecture will introduce attendees to the Judeo-Persian musical tradition through recorded music, performed examples, and musical analysis. Dr. Dardashti's grandfather, Younes Dardashti, was one of the most famous singers of Persian classical music; this family history and her own artistic work (www.galeetdardashti.com) are central to this presentation.

Last Sigma Tau Delta / SEA meeting of the year

Come to the last Sigma Tau Delta/Students of English Association event of the year.  It will be a bit of business and a lot of celebration.  We will say goodbye and thank our outgoing president, Katie Cross, and other graduating officers, and choose next year's officers.

Even if you've never come to anything all year, we'd love to see you.
