Moduli of Tropical Plane Curves

Smooth curves in the tropical plane come from unimodular triangulations of lattice polygons. The skeleton of such a curve is a metric graph whose genus is the number of lattice points in the interior of the polygon. In this talk we report on work concerning the following realizability problem: Characterize all metric graphs that admit a planar representation as a smooth tropical curve. For instance, about 29.5 percent of metric graphs of genus 3 have this property. (Joint work with Sarah Brodsky, Michael Joswig, and Bernd Sturmfels.)

Topic: Text as Data

Abstract: Professor Wedeking will give a summary of three projects that he has been involved in using text as data (1 is published, 1 is under review, and 1 is ongoing). Specifically, for each of the 3 projects, He will:  (1) describe the method he's using, what it generally is used for;  (2) the motivation for the project-e.g., the substantive research question and relevant background information;  (3) a brief description of the data; and  (4) the results of the method and the substantive conclusions.  The three projects are: (1) measuring how legal issues are framed (e.g., free speech vs. right to privacy, etc) and how that helps parties win; (2) uncovering the clarity of texts using readability formulas; and (3) scaling justices with texts- uncovering their ideological positions (how liberal or conservative they are) using their words.

Year of The Middle East Finale: Divahn

Divahn features the Middle Eastern and Sephardic Jewish Music of Galeet Dardashti.

http://www.divahn.com/

Iranian-descended singer Galeet Dardashti leads Divahn's edgy all-female power-house ensemble. The group has engendered an international following, performing in venues ranging from international concert halls to the most prestigious clubs in NYC. Infusing traditional and original Middle Eastern Jewish songs with sophisticated harmonies, entrancing improvisations, and funky arrangements, Divahn's thrilling live shows feature lush string arrangements, eclectic Indian, Middle Eastern, and Latin percussion, and vocals spanning Hebrew, Judeo-Spanish, Persian, Arabic, and Aramaic. “Divan,” a word common to Hebrew, Persian, and Arabic, means a collection of songs or poetry. Through their music, the group creatively underscores common ground between diverse Middle Eastern cultures and religion.
