SWAP Meeting with 2014 Summer Mini-Grant Recipients

The UK Appalachian Center is proud to host a SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) Meeting with our 2014 Summer Mini-Grant Recipients.  Dr. Robin Vanderpool is a faculty memeber in the Department of Health Behavior.  Dr. Kang Namkoong is faculty in the Department of Community Leadership and Development in the College of Ag.  Michelle Justus Talbott is a graduate student here at the University of Kentucky.  All of the applicants have research interests and focus in Appalachia.  This meeting will be held from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the UK Appalachian Center on Thrusday, April 2, 2015.

SWAP Meeting with 2014 Brown Award Recipients

The UK Appalachian Center is hosting a SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) Meeting from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 19, 2015.  Two of five 2014 Brown Award recipients, Lindsay Shade and Kathryn Engle will be presenting on their research.  Each presenter has research interests in Appalachia and are graduate students at the University of Kentucky.

Lexington Old-Time Music Gathering

Please, join in the fun at the Lexington Old-Time Music Gathering in Lexington, KY!  This event spans February 12, 2015 through February 15, 2015 and has something for everyone.  This is an opportunity for community engagement, learning about traditional mountain music, and hearing artists perform.  During the Saturday, 2/14/15 event, there will be fun for all ages at the Appalachian Youth Day portion of the event from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.  Admission for the Youth Day is free, and there will be workshops, open mic, jam sessions, singing, and dances!  (Please note that a parent must accompany children at all times.)  Please, see the Lexington Old-Time Music Gathering website for detailed information, including a full schedule of performers and events: http://lexoldtime.com/.

"Placing Modern Moonshine in America: Exploring Appalachia's Role"

The UK Appalachian Center is proud to host Helen Rosko, MS Candidate from the University of Tennessee--Knoxville.  Ms. Rosko's talk is entitled, "Placing Modern Moonshine in America: Exploring Appalachia’s Role."  This is part of the Appalachian Center's SWAP (Sharing Work on Appalachia in Progress) series and will be held at the UK Appalachian Center on Friday, February 13, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.  This is a free event for UK Students, Staff, and Faculty.

Appalachian Forum with talk by Fran Ansley on Labor Organizing in Appalachia

Please join the UK Appalachian Center at an Appalachian Forum with Dr. Fran Ansley, Professor Emeritus of law at the University of Tennessee Knoxville on Wednesday, November 5, 2014.  Dr. Ansley will give a talk entitled Telescoping Movements, Telescoping Time:  Five Decades of Looking for the Labor Movement  through an Appalachian Lens in the Niles Gallery from 3:30 to 5 p.m.  This is a part of the Appalachian Forum Speaker Series on Civil Rights, Labor and Environmental Movements in Appalachia.  The event is free and open to the public.

Film Screening and Discussion of "Anne Braden: Southern Patriot" with Mimi Pickering

Appalachian Forum with Mimi PickeringPlease join the UK Appalachian Center for an evening with Mimi Pickering as part of our Appalachain Forum Series on Appalachian Labor, Civil Rights, and Environmental Movements.  This is a free and public screening of "Anne Braden: Southern Patriot" followed by a discussion of the film with the Director and Producer of the film, Mimi Pickering.  The event will be held in Memorial Hall from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, 2014.

International Youth Water Justice Summit

Join the U.K. Appalachian Center for the International Youth Water Justice Summit at Memorial Hall on Saturday, July 12th, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  This event is free and open to the public; all ages are welcome to attend (children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian). Lunch will be provided. There will be presentations and activities related to water justice locally, regionally, and globally throughout the day. Water justice refers to fair and inclusive distribution and stewardship of water resources. This is an opportunity to think about how you are connected to everyone in the world through water, from the make-up of the human body to the watersheds providing us with drinking water to the river, ocean, and weather systems that keep water circulating.

Please, see the construction plan map below and note that it is subject to change. It may be necessary to park in one of the alternate locations listed above.
