Peachy-Keen: Tracing the Introduction of Peaches (Prunus persica) into the Americas

This talk demonstrates how plant remains can be used to trace food pathways in the modern day. The plant is peaches and the talk will examine pits recovered from a Mission period archaeological site located on Sapelo Island, one of the Georgia Sea Islands, where UK Dept of Anthropology archaeologist Dr. R. Jefferies is conducting excavations and research.

Screening of Absolutely Safe

Absolutely Safe is a documentary film by Carol Ciancutti-Leyva (2007, approximately 90 minutes). The screening will be followed by a discussion and Q&A with Director Ciancutti-Leyva and Judy Norsigian, co-founder and former Executive Director of the nonprofit, public interest organization, Our Bodies Ourselves (OBOS). Absolutely Safe “takes an open-minded, personal approach to the controversy over breast implant safety. Ultimately, it is the story of everyday women who find themselves and their breasts in the tangled and confusing intersection of health, money, science, and beauty.”

Summer Internships at BackYard Brains !

BackYard Brains

Do you have an interest in neuroscience? Electrical, Mechanical or Computer engineering? Want to develop your own experiments and publish your results? Learn to communicate with the public? Maybe even all of the above? Then you're in luck! The Backyard Brains Summer Internship program is an intensive 10-week program for undergraduates to participate in hands-on neuroscience research and experiment design with award winning neuroscientists. This is the 3rd year of running our prestigious (and paid!) summer program and this year it will run from May 23, 2016 to Aug 5, 2016. All applications must be received by 12:00pm ET on March 12 to be eligible. We will be notifying applicants of their status by March 21, 2016.   Do you have an interest in neuroscience? Algebra Seminar

Title: Quantum error-correcting codes

Abstract: Quantum error correction is a necessity for eventual quantum computers and unfortunately much more difficult than the classical one. In this talk, we will explore these difficulties and how to fight them with good quantum codes. The focus will be on stabilizer formalism, as a compact description of almost every known quantum code. We will use this algebraic language to translate questions raising from quantum computation to classical error correction.

Physics background is neither assumed nor required.
