In addition to reviewing the main topics covered by both exams, the workshops will discuss strategies for preparing and performing well on these exams.  The workshops are free and open to any current or recent UK student.

Setting Your Own Expiration Date: Challenges to the Death with Dignity Laws

Abstract:

Several patients over the years have used Death with Dignity laws to "set their own expiration dates."  One recent case involved a nurse in the United Kingdom who decided she had lived long enough and did not want to risk living without quality of life as she got older.  She arranged for her own assisted suicide when she was in perfect health.  Dr. Verheijde will explore the freedoms and limits of autonomy surrounding death with dignity laws.

Objectives:

Indicate a legal and moral context for the “Right to Die” and subsequent “Rational Suicide” claim.

Discuss the meaning of “dignity” and “autonomy” in the “death with dignity” narrative.

Discuss the question of rational suicide.

Abstract:

``A  remarkable mathematician whose classical Chinese philosophical ideas helped him build bridges between China and the West. Shiing-shen Chern (1911-2004) is one of the fathers of modern differential geometry. Following a classical upbringing, Chern pursued his mathematical studies in Hamburg and Paris during the 1930s, building on the work of Elie Cartan. After World War II he traveled between the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton and China. In 1960 he moved to Berkeley, where he created a center for geometry, and in 1981 became cofounder of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley. His reputation led to invitations from the leaders of China to help renew research mathematics in China following the destruction of academic life during the Cultural Revolution.'' -- 54 min
