Alumni Reception- Celebrating Civil War Documentary Preview

Come join us for a history-alumni only reception with refreshments before:

A sneak-peek screening of Civil War: The Untold Story, a visually stunning new 5-part documentary series narrated by Elizabeth McGovern (Downton Abbey) and produced for public television by Great Divide Pictures. Shown will be Episode 4, Death Knell of the Confederacy which focuses on the Battles of Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge and the 1864 Campaign for Atlanta. Featured as on camera historian in the series is UK Associate Professor of History Amy Murrell Taylor. The event is sponsored by the University of Kentucky College of Arts and Sciences. The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion led by Professor Taylor.

Be Christian! A Japanese Samurai Evangelizes America

Gavin James Campbell is professor of history in the Graduate School of Global Studies at Doshisha University

in Kyoto, Japan. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and began his

career researching Southern music and culture, publishing results in the Journal of American Folklore,

Musical Quarterly, American Music, and serving four years as music editor for Southern Cultures. In 2004 he

published his first book, Music and the Making of a New South, with UNC Press. More recently he has

turned to transpacific history, with an emphasis on US‐Japan contact in the 19th century. His most recent

publicatons have examined Western tourists' encounter with Japanese etiquette and Japanese toilets. He is

currently writng a book about Niijima Jō, a Japanese samurai who ran away to the US in 1864 and stayed

for nine years before returning to Japan a Christian and educator.

Purim Festival: A celebration of Jewish culture

Join the University of Kentucky Hillel and Jewish Student's organization for their Purim celebration! 

Purim is the celebration of the Story of Esther, who along with Mordecai foiled the Persian plot to kill the Jews. This holiday is a festive one and a celebration of Jewish culture. To celebrate we exchange gifts of food (mishloach manot) and hold a festive party. We invite all members of the Kentucky campus to come celebrate this festive holiday, and learn more about Jewish culture and Jewish life on the Kentucky Campus. Kosher Refreshments will be provided. All people are welcome to attend. A Jewish movie will be shown.

How to Tie A Sari

This workshop will teach students how to tie the traditional Indian woman dress, the sari. Once students learn how to tie a sari, there will be a small competition to see who can tie their sari the fastest. Refreshments will be provided.
