Astro Seminar: Mapping Ten Thousand Nearby Galaxies in 3D

Mapping Nearby Galaxies at APO (MaNGA) is an ongoing integral field spectroscopy survey carried out as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-IV.
Started in the fall of 2014, MaNGA is utilizing multiple hexagonal fiber bundles fed to the BOSS spectrograph on the 2.5m Sloan Telescope to study the internal structure and formation history of roughly 10,000 nearby galaxies
spanning a wide range in mass, type, and environment. Fiber bundles of various diameters ranging from 12 arcsec to 32 arcsec are used to match the apparent size distribution of galaxies. Most target galaxies will be covered out to 1.5-2.5 effective radii with a spatial resolution of 1-2kpc. Such spatially resolved spectroscopy beyond the central fibers covered by previous
generation of SDSS can provide a great deal of information about each galaxy. I will give an overview of science goals of the survey, discuss the hardware design, survey sample design, observing strategy, and the data quality of MaNGA.
I will also showcase some interesting examples from the 1400 galaxies we have already observed.

Kentucky Sky Talk: Traveling Through the Orion Nebula

This Sky Talk will be given by Prof C. R. "Bob" O'Dell of Vanderbilt University.  Bob was the project scientist who guided the development and construction of the Hubble Space Telescope and used it to make groundbreaking studies of the Orion Nebula.  The program will consist of a 40 minute Japanese National Television (NHK) documentary on Bob, HST, and his studies of Orion, followed by a question and answer period in which he will answer audience queries.

The MacAdam Student Observatory staff are pleased to welcome the public to our facility. We present a program of public outreach on the second Thursday of every month.  A 40-minute presentation on astronomy will be held  in  the Chemistry-Physics Building, before moving across the street to the observatory, weather permitting. Note that the temperature at the telescope is the same as it is outside. The Observatory is located on Parking Structure #2 on the University of Kentucky campus on this map.)

Parking Note: Guests for the monthly SkyTalk that bring vehicles should plan on leaving them in Parking Structure #2, next to the observatory. Visitors that park elsewhere are subject to citation. Some streets near the observatory will be closed due to construction intermittently over the next few years. These include Rose Street and Alumni Drive. The recommended path to Parking Structure #2 is outlined in red, here: Directions with street closures.pdf.

Title:  Annihilators of Homogeneous Symmetric Polynomials Under the Action of Partial Differentiation

Abstract:  Let E ans S be polynomial rings of degree n over a field k and let S act on E by partial differentiation.  Given a homogeneous symmetric polynomial f, what can we say about Ann(f)?  For a general polynomial the annihilator turns out to be as 'small' as possible.  We will discuss what 'small' means in this context and exhibit a specific polynomial that satisfies these conditions (based on work of M. Boij, J. Migliore, R. Miro-Roig, U. Nagel).

Physics and Astronomy Colloquium: A New Era of Symmetries in the Hadronic Interaction

The search for a weak component of the nuclear force began in 1957, the year parity violation was first predicted. While it has been observed in compound nuclei with large magnifications, a systematic characterization of the Hadronic Weak Interaction has been unfeasible for over half a centry. New experimental facilities and technology have rejuvenated our efforts to map out this final frontier of the Standard Model, and to search for new physics.

Scavenger Hunt

Please meet in the lobby of CC2 at 6:00 PM for instructions on the Scavenger Hunt which you will be doing with your peer mentor and fellow mentees in downtown Lexington.  After the scavenger hunt, you will have the opportunity to attend a Poetry Slam!  This is during the Roots & Heritage Festival, so it will be lots of fun!

To prepare, download Whiteboard, a free app for your iPad. Also download our map, by saving it to your Photos on the iPad. We'll be using this map on Monday, along with photos you collect during this scavenger hunt.

Work with your Peer Mentor to take a photo at these locations. Find as many as you can before the Poetry Slam at the Downtown Arts Center at 7:30pm. Upload these photos to our Facebook group.
