Research

Nineteenth-century German and western European history, with teaching interests extending through the twentieth century.  My current project is a study of the German Crown Princess/Empress Victoria (1840-1901), not as a great “what if” of German history if her husband had reigned for more than three months, but as an active reformer.  Areas of focus are her efforts to expand educational and employment opportunities for women, to improve various areas of public health (especially for children), and to refine aesthetic sensibilities through arts (primarily the decorative arts).

History of education and the professions, social history of the middle classes, women’s history.
