Biography:

Raised in southeastern Minnesota. 'First' career as entrepreneur in Washington DC and North Carolina's Research Triangle. Avid cyclist and swimmer.

My dissertation research is a case study in the Alberta tar/oilsands where I seek a geographically-grounded understanding of non-conventional hydrocarbon extraction. Fitting under the umbrella of political ecology, economic geography and critical resource studies, my project relies on ethnographic methods to engage individual production laborers. Of primary concern is how regulatory structures are animated in messy micro-scale labor practices of extraction and commodity production.

Funded by grants from University of Kentucky Barnhart Withington endowment and Canadian Foreign Ministry Canadian Studies, I have conducted fieldwork 2010-12, 2017 centered in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
