Biography:

Anna Gatewood is a PhD student in the Department of Geography and Assistant Director of Academic Enhancement at University of Kentucky. Her academic foci are issues of race, industry, and cultural tourism in the barrier island regions of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. She is especially interested how these issues come to bear on the Gullah or Geechee people(s) who live in these areas. Also of particular interest to Anna are explorations of the ways in which existing power structures are subverted through hidden or obscured channels, especially as this pertains to issues of race-based social and economic hierarchizations in the American South.

Anna is from the coast of Georgia where she grew up riding horses and going to the beach. She earned her BA in English from Valdosta State University, where she focused on both creative writing and literature. There, as a peer tutor, she found her passion for undergraduate education. After graduation, she worked for a year as a professional Writing Consultant at Savannah College of Art and Design. Anna came to Lexington in 2010 in pursuit of her Masters in Literature. Anna has since completed her Masters, having written her thesis on issues of race and domestic service in the works of William Faulkner, Harry Crews, and Katherine Stockett. Anna lives in Lexington with her husband, Jamie, who is also in graduate school at UK, and their hairy, four-legged children, Blue and Duke. When she's not working on school assignments, you can usually find her in the kitchen or the garden.
