The members of The Cooperative for the Humanities and Social Sciences are excited to host an upcoming Zoom webinar, "Universities, Youths, Race, and Policing."
Our webinar brings together four speakers who have diverse experiences in an array of fields, which they will use to explore the tensions between race and campus policing by asking "How can we promote racial equality and social justice in youth and campus policing?” Our panel includes members of both the University of Kentucky and Berea College faculty and staff, as well as members of the policing community, who will engage in several short presentations, followed by a question forum.
Our first panelist is the Chief of Police of the Berea Police Department, Eric Scott, who will discuss the relationship between the Berea police and Berea College. He will be followed by Dr. Dwayne Mack, Professor of History and Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Berea College, who will touch on topics related to his book Violence Against Black Bodies: An Intersectional Analysis of How Black Lives Continue to Matter. Rebecca Ballard DiLoreto, who is an attorney working on issues of juvenile justice and the Executive Director of the Institute for Compassion in Justice Externship, will then speak about the youth and policing more generally. Our final panelist, Dr. Marro Inoue, Anthropologist, Associate Professor of Japan Studies, and Faculty Director of the International Village LLP at the University of Kentucky, will discuss his field work as an intern with the University of Kentucky Police Department, where he shadowed the campus officers as they worked.
The nature of this event falls in close alignment with our Mission Statement and our goal of "promoting the contributions that [interdisciplinary] research and those producing it can make to the betterment of society." As voices from academia and the wider community join in conversation through this webinar, we hope to foster connections between campus police organizations, students, and faculty in our institutions. We also strive to facilitate their work and to improve and reform the racial equity of policing both off and on college campuses.
