BELIZE - OFF THE BEATEN PATH: WILDLIFE SURVEY AND CONSERVATION IN BELIZE
June 2-28; Application deadline: March 1, 2020

In this course, students will learn: 1) basic conservation biology principles and their application to Belize; and 2) how to identify Belizean wildlife using established monitoring techniques such as bird mist-netting, camera-trapping, and scat sampling. The data gathered from these monitoring efforts will support Belize's efforts in conservation.  To cap-off the course, students will travel to Tobacco Caye to experience marine diversity in the Caribbean Sea.
*Students will enroll in BIO 355: Biology Study Abroad (3 credit hours). Note that BIO 148 is a pre-requisite for this program. 

CHINA - CHINESE HISTORY THROUGH ART

This program examines the evolution of human life in China from its known origins until the beginning of the twentieth century. It presents Chinese history through physical objects and environments and surveys the arts and culture from the Neolithic period to contemporary China. 
*Students will enroll in HIS 355: Special Topics in Non-Western History since 1789: Chinese History Through Art (3 credit hours).

CHINA - CONVERSATIONAL CHINESE

Students will advance their Chinese language skills and learn about modern Chinese culture and society through this 4-week, intensive language and culture program at Shanghai University. Students will learn Chinese language in an immersion environment while living in the international dorm at Shanghai University, located at the center of Shanghai, one of the leading financial and cultural centers of the world.
*Students will receive independent study credit for CHI 395/495G: Chinese Studies (6 credit hours).

DENMARK - SOCIAL MEDIA: DANISH CUISINE AND THE DIGITAL

This program offers students the unique opportunity to study and use social media in Copenhagen, Denmark. Students will engage with food in the age of social media, specifically focusing on Danish cuisine and its impact by/on digital, mobile, and social media. 
*Students will enroll in either WRD 210: Social Media: Theory, Culture, Politics, and Practice (3 credit hours) or WRD 395: Independent Study (3 credit hours). This course fulfills the UK Core: Inquiry Into the Humanities requirement.

ECUADOR - EVOLUTIONARY ECOLOGY OF THE GALAPAGOS ARCHIPELAGO

This program will explore key ecological and evolutionary concepts through the reading and review of primary literature while on the University of Kentucky's campus. These will include dispersal, niche theory, competition theory, competitive exclusion principle, species abundance, diversity, kleptoparasitism, and speciation. Once the group arrives at the Galapagos Islands, observations and analyses will be performed from observations made directly with aspects of biology that occur on the islands.
*This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students from all academic disciplines who have at least a 3.0 GPA and have received a grade of B or higher in BIO 303. Students will enroll in BIO 580: Evolutionary Ecology of the Galapagos Archipelago (4 credit hours). 

GERMANY - INTENSIVE INTERMEDIATE GERMAN IN MAINZ

Learn German in Mainz, Germany! This program will take students to the scenic and historic city of Mainz, on the Rhine River, home to major media, publishing and manufacturing and the capital of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Students will learn German from experienced instructors at the Johannes-Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz, experience student life on the university campus, and go on excursions to sites along the Rhine River, famous for its scenic beauty, castles, myths and legends. Students will also visit Frankfurt, a vibrant multicultural metropolis that is also the center of European banking and finance, and Darmstadt, known for engineering and technology as well as modern art and architecture.
*This program is open to students who have completed a beginning level sequence of German, or who can demonstrate an equivalent proficiency level (first-year German, German 101 & 102). Students who have completed German 201 but not German 202 may also apply to the program. Students will receive transfer credit from the University of Mainz equivalent to GER 201 and GER 202 and MCL 376 (9 credit hours). Students who have already completed GER 201 may instead receive transfer credit equivalent to GER 395 (3 credit hours). students will need to work wtih teh instructor in order to receive academic credit. This program is for transfer equivalency only.

IRELAND - CREATIVE WRITING IN IRELAND

Imagine this: an intensive, multi-genre, creative writing workshop, with Dublin as the classroom and the landscape and culture of Ireland as inspiration! In addition to the creative writing workshop, students will be immersed in Irish literature, drama, visual arts, music and culture. When not on the campus of Trinity College, students will have the opportunity to explore all that the great city of Dublin has to offer - in addition to day visits to both Sligo and Cork.
*Students will enroll in either ENG 107/207/407/507: Introductory Workshop in Creative Writing: Ireland (3 credit hours). ENG 107 Writing Craft: Introduction to Creative Writing sartisfies UK Core Intellectual Inquiry in Arts and Creativity.

ISRAEL - ARCHAEOLOGY OF ANCIENT ISRAEL

Take a journey to the past as UK joins forces with universities from around the world to excavate a 3,000 year old city in the heartland of Israel. During the summer of 2019, UK students will participate in the excavations at Tell es-Safi, Israel—the biblical city of Gath and hometown of the biblical warrior, Goliath. At Safi, students will experience three weeks of training in excavation technique, archaeological documentation, and data management. With a focus on developing the essential skills of undergraduate research, this program is designed to help students see a large-scale, international research project up close, while actively contributing to its research outcomes. 
*This program is open to undergraduate and graduate students from all academic disciplines, although it will be of particular interest to students with a desire to do archaeological fieldwork. Students will enroll in MCL 592: Research Practicum: Archaeology in Israel (3 credit hours).

JORDAN - INTENSIVE ARABIC LANGUAGE STUDY IN JORDAN

This program allow students to study Modern Standard Arabic language, Arab culture, and Jordanian dialect (dialect for second year students only). The program provides students with native speaker conversation partners and organizes 4 weekend trips to famous sites (Petra & Wadi Rum, Madaba & the Dead Sea, Ajloun, and Jarash). Classes will be help at Qasid, a premier Arabic institution in Amman, the capital and largest city in the country, with a population of over 2 million. Amman is a fast-growing cosmopolitan city.
*Students will enroll in a total of 6 credit hours. (6ch of AIS 395 OR 6ch of AIS 495G OR 6ch between AIS 395 and AIS 495G).  

MEXICO - SOCIAL & ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE IN OAXACA, MEXICO

This research-based, eight week program offers students the opportunity to design and conduct their own social or environmental science research project under the supervision of knowledgeable and experienced local advisors. This preparation entails in-depth learning about the diverse environments of Southern Mexico and the rich and heterogeneous cultures of Oaxaca’s distinct regions. Through field visits, guest lectures and classroom activities, students will learn about the historical and contemporary dimensions of the relationship between the peoples of Oaxaca, the land and resources, and a global political economy.
*This program is open to undergraduate students from all academic disciplines who are at least a sophomore standing and who have taken at least two semesters of Spanish (or who have an equivalent proficiency). Students will enroll in  GEO 365: Special Topics in Regional Geography: Society and Environment in Oaxaca, Mexico (3 credit hours); GEO 431: Political Ecology (3 credit hours); and GEO 406: Field Studies in Geography: Undergraduate Field Research Experience, Oaxaca, Mexico (3 credit hours). GEO 406 is a lab course which fulfills the A&S College Laboratory or Field Experience Requirement. Students who have already taken GEO 431 may take GEO 316: Environment and Development (3 credit hours) instead. GEO 316 fulfills the UK Core: Global Dynamics requirement. Anthropology students interested in this program will instead enroll in ANT 352: Special Topics in Cultural Anthropology: Society and Environment in Oaxaca (3 credit hours) and ANT 399: Field-based/Community-based Education in Anthropology (3 credit hours).

MOROCCO - ETHNOGRAPHIC FIELD SCHOOL: LOCAL LIVELIHOODS & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The Department of Anthropology at the University of Kentucky, in partnership with Dar Si-Hmad (DSH) Ethnographic Field School in Agadir, Morocco will offer a three week ethnographic field school in summer 2019. This field school will be led by Dr. Juliana McDonald (Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Kentucky) in collaboration with DSH faculty and experts in the field sites.
*Students will enroll in ANT 302: Introduction to Ethnographic Research Methods (3 credit hours). 

NETHERLANDS - FACTORS INFLUENCING THE EMERGENCE OF INFECTIOUS DISEASES

This education abroad program is designed for students pursuing careers in healthcare and will bring them to the Netherlands, a country where, in comparison to the USA, life expectancy is longer, risk of dying before the age of 65 is lower, and a greater percentage of the GDP is spent on the health of its citizens. The program will include guest lecturers from the University of Amsterdam and site visits to the Prostitution Information Center, SOA AIDS clinic, Translational Institute Drug and Democracy Program, GGD municipal health Rotterdam-Rijnmond, and CJG clinic Rijnmond. In additional to learning about factors influencing the emergence of infectious disease, students will also gain perspective on global culture and healthcare in practice. 
*This program is open to undergraduate students who have sophmore or higher class standing and at least a 2.5 GPA. Students will enroll in BIO 355: Biology Study Abroad (3 credit hours). Note that BIO 148 or BIO 208 are pre-requisites for participating in this program.

NETHERLANDS - FROM SCIENCE TO CULTURE: EXPLORING DRUG USE AND ADDICTION

Students on this program will examine the general principles of drug actions, with an emphasis on the pharmacological and behavioral effects of commonly abused psychoactive drugs, and how drug dependence develops and is treated. Through this program, students will learn how cultural differences in attitudes towards substance use, addiction and treatment influence how these topics are researched and how the drug dependent patient population is treated both by society and the health care system.
*Undergraduates will enroll in PSY 459: Neuropharmacology: Drugs and Behavior (3 credit hours). Graduate students will need to work with the instructor to receive academic credit for their participation on this program. Note that PSY 215 and 312 (or BIO 148 or equivalent) are pre-requisites for participating on this program.

SOUTH AFRICA - RACE RELATIONS AND THE STRUGGLE FOR EQUALITY IN SOUTH AFRICA

This program will have several major themes:  (1) a focus on slavery in South Africa; (2) a throrough review of  European/white attitudes, first toward Africans that led to a justification of slavery and then discrimation after slavery; and (3) a survey of the quest by South African blacks for emanicipation from slavery and colonialism and then equality in the 20th and 21st Centuries.
*Students will enroll in A&S 500: Special Course: An Examination of Race Relations in South Africa (3 credit hours).

SOUTH AFRICA - SUMMER INTERNSHIP in CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

This internship program offers hands-on experience working with one of several non-profit and non-governmental organizations in Cape Town, South Africa. In addition students will learn about contemporary South Africa in a conventional seminar taught by UK faculty. Offering experience in nearly every facet of the non-profit and non-governmental sector, this internship will increase student awareness of how to build other non-profit organizations, how to develop environmental education and youth leadership, support victims of domestic violence, build a sustainable market for artists from underprivileged communities, develop a curriculum for elementary math and science educational reform, and more.
*Students will enroll in EXP 396: Experiential Education (3 credit hours) and A&S 300: Special Course: Culture of Transformation in South Africa (3 credit hours) Note: EXP 396 requires a learning contract which should be completed prior to leaving the U.S.
