Bachelor of Arts (BA) vs. Bachelor of Science (BS)

Any major offered by the College of Arts & Sciences can be earned with either a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree. A Bachelor of Arts degree is standard among majors in the social sciences and humanities, although certain disciplines promote BS degrees for particular emphasis within social science and humanities fields. Bachelor of Science degrees are more common among the natural and mathematical sciences. There are slightly different requirements for each degree, which are listed below.

 

 

 

Bachelor of Arts
Students completing a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree must:

  • Complete a minimum of 120 degree hours and earn a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
  • Complete a minimum of six hours in pre-major coursework.
  • Complete a minimum of 42 major hours – 24 hours must be at 300-level or above and earn a minimum 2.0 GPA in the major.
  • Complete the UK Core requirements or USP requirements.
  • Complete the A&S requirements of six credit hours in natural and mathematical sciences, social sciences, and humanities beyond those completed for the UK Core requirements or USP requirements. 
  • Complete the A&S foreign language requirement. Contact your advisor or the A&S Advising Center for an explanation of the foreign language requirement.
  • Complete the A&S laboratory/fieldwork requirement. 
  • Complete 39 hours in 300-level courses.

Bachelor of Science
Students completing the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree must:

  • Complete a minimum of 120 degree hours and earn a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
  • Complete a minimum of six hours in pre-major coursework.
  • Complete a minimum of 42 major hours – 24 hours must be at 300-level or above and earn a minimum 2.0 GPA in the major.
  • Complete the UK Core requirements or USP requirements.
  • Complete the A&S requirements of three credit hours in natural and mathematical sciences, social sciences, and humanities beyond those completed for the UK Core requirements or USP requirements.
  • Complete the A&S foreign language requirement. Contact your advisor or the A&S Advising Center for an explanation of the foreign language requirement.
  • Complete the A&S laboratory/fieldwork requirement.  
  • Complete 60 hours in biological, physical, mathematical and/or computer sciences (100-level and above).
